Please review our imaging techniques below and don’t hesitate to contact us or talk to our dentist about any of the following methods.

Cone Beam 3D Dental Imaging

Dental cone beam tomography, also known as Cone Beam CT, is used when regular facial or dental x-rays do not apply to the dental condition being treated. With cone beam tomography, our dentist can take a 3D image of the teeth, gums and other soft tissues, as well as the bones and the nerve pathways of the roots, to correctly identify and treat the problem.

Dental cone beam tomography also helps identify unusual bone growth, nasal cavity issues, jaw diseases, and problems in the sinus area. The images produced are usually more detailed than the ones you would acquire with the help of traditional CT. This also helps identify complications in the muscular structure, lymph nodes, nerves and glands in the mouth. This type of x-ray is often used when planning for in-depth surgery.

Digital X-Rays

Among the most commonly used dental imaging techniques, digital x-rays are useful as they do not expose you to as much radiation as film x-rays tend to do. The imaging results helps our dentist identify any growths or abnormalities in the gums, teeth and enamel with efficiency.

The x-ray machine is connected to a computer that showcases the image within minutes of them being taken. This not only makes your dental appointment shorter, it also allows our dentist to view the results immediately instead of having to wait hours or days.

Intraoral Camera

Another common dental imaging technique, the intraoral camera, is used when our dentist needs to see the interior of your mouth as clearly as possible. In this case, the camera is largely focused on the inside of your mouth.

There are three different types of intraoral x-rays that are used, based on the area of the mouth that is being x-rayed:

  • Periapical x-ray – This x-ray reveals the entire tooth, from where it starts at the jaw to the enamel. This is important to identify any unusual growths, abnormalities or changes which might be occurring at the root, near the gum, or even other bone structures.
  • Bitewing x-ray – Focusing on the enamel of the teeth, bitewing x-rays are essential for identifying cavities and tooth decay that can occur between the teeth. This tool also easily identifies tooth decay caused by gum diseases. Sometimes for replacement or renewing of fillings, the bitewing x-ray can be used to identify the level of deterioration that has taken place.
  • Occlusal x-ray – This x-rays allows for a bigger look at the placement and arch of all the teeth. This is used to identify alignment problems and to fix them with orthodontic treatment or other dental procedures.

These are the most common types of intraoral x-rays that are taken with an intraoral camera. Our dentist may use any of these based on the kind of dental problem you are facing.
